Flood Emergency 2017 – Message from the President

Photo courtesy of Australasian Aerial Photograph 2017.

Dear Members,

In the wake of the devastation of ex-TC Debbie and all that she brought with her, we truly hope this email reaches you and your families safe and dry.

I wanted to personally send my best wishes to you all during what is likely a difficult and challenging time for many of our colleagues and friends in the Logan & Scenic Rim districts.

In amongst much of the coverage of the flood emergency in our districts, I thought it might be useful to you to provide you some direct links to some information that may be of benefit or comfort to you.

You should be aware that the Queensland Government has issued a statement to support people who have been impacted by the severe weather throughout the Logan & Scenic Rim districts offering people an opportunity to apply to receive financial support for hardship. Click here for more details. You can also reach out to the Community Recovery Hotline on 1800 173 349 or http://www.communityrecovery.qld.gov.au for more information.

The Queensland Law Society has also kindly reached out this morning and offered their help to our members. If your practice has suffered as a result, please contact us to help you get in touch with the Queensland Law Society to access whatever support they can offer you during this time.

For the QLS Guidance Note for practices affected by flood disasters or severe weather, please click here.

If we can be of any help to you during this difficult time, please reach out to us. Whilst my mobile is currently on and off as it pleases with the outages in the area, please feel free to email hello@lsrla.org.au and we will return back to you as soon as possible.

For LOGAN road hazards, weather and power outages, you can visit the Logan City Council Disaster Management website here.

For SCENIC RIM road closures and hazards, you can visit the Scenic Rim Council Roads Update website here.

A side note: I personally apologise for this email not reaching you sooner, perhaps when it was of greater use, however I myself was isolated and powerless on what lovingly became known as Flagstone Island from Thursday to Monday.

Please stay safe and look after one another.

With warm regards,
Michele Davis | President
Logan & Scenic Rim Law Association

Ethics CPD – Adventures of the Cheshire Cat – 16 Feb 2017

ethics-wordlePlease join us for our first CPD Event – The Adventures of the Cheshire Cat.

Court, Client, Colleague, Community: What are our fundamental ethic duties we owe to various stakeholders? How do we navigate confidentiality and legal professional privilege? What’s the proper basis to instigate a claim or action on behalf of your client?

This workshop will examine the question of whether we are ‘lost lawyers’. This is an opportunity for participants to review their understanding of the fundamental ethical duties we owe to various stakeholders.

In this workshop we will examine the problems the Cheshire Cat has in his representation of Arnold Becker over the ownership of a computer game.

The issues to be considered will include confidentiality, legal professional privilege, and a proper basis to instigate a claim or action on behalf of a client.

Thanks to our generous sponsors, Television Education Network, we are able to offer this event FREE to our members.

If you aren’t yet a member of the Logan & Scenic Rim Law Association, click here to visit our website and sign up today.

Whilst this invitation has been extended to you as a member of the LSRLA, if you have a colleague or friend who may be interested in joining you for the evening, please feel free to invite them along also.

We will have some light refreshments for our attendees for the evening. Places are limited, so reserve your ticket now so you don’t miss out!

This is a great opportunity to get your Ethics CPD point before the end of March cut off.

We look forward to seeing you all there!

News: Regional lawyering research

knowledge-is-powerHave you ever read something about regional lawyers and thought to yourself “yes, well that’s a point, but there’s so much more to it” or “what about the challenges we face when it comes to x, y, and z” or maybe even a straight-out “no, that’s incorrect“. .

Well, if you have a few minutes, we encourage you to share your own experience as a regional lawyer.

Dr Francesca Bartlett of the University of Queensland and Dr Caroline Hunt of the University of Southern Queensland are talking with regional lawyers to understand more about us.  In addition to talking to practitioners directly, they also have made available an online survey for participants to complete.  To ensure that the research truly reflects the life of regional lawyers, we encourage you to take part in the survey. You can access it here.

In addition to the obvious benefits, think about the current oversupply of law graduates, your plans for the succession of your business, advertising regional law as a possible future for great graduates and young lawyers.  There are unquantifiable benefits to this research being available and being accurate to the real life of a regional lawyer.

If you’re interested in speaking with the researchers, they would be pleased to hear from you.  You can reach them on 07 3346 7526.  Alternatively, feel free to contact us and we will do what we can to connect you.

[We recently wrote about this very topic in our members news update.  If you are a member and didn’t receive our update, please let us know.  If you didn’t receive our update because you’re not a member, head over to our membership page and join today!]

Our Launch is coming – 9 June 2016

photo-1416235150813-dcb31b0653e8We’re planning our first social launch event for 6:30pm on Thursday 9 June 2016 to meet all our newest members and colleagues in the district.  This is a great opportunity to meet your local colleagues in a social, friendly and welcoming environment.

The Queensland Law Society has been very supportive of our establishment and as such the local news about our formation has gained a lot of interest.

We will be sending out invitations to our current members once the venue has been confirmed.  We hope to have these out very soon. In the meantime, put the date in your calendar so you don’t miss out!

In the meantime, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to pop us an email at lsrla2015@gmail.com.
